Like Church said, Pendragon is a good series. Pendragon is about a boy named Bobby Pendragon who travels to and from different "worlds" trying to stop them from being corrupted by a demonic "world" traveler by the name of St. Daine. If you don't mind a good story with some adult scenes "A Dream of Eagles" by Jack Whyte is a good series, it's like the Knights of the Round Table stuff, the first few books are prior to King Arthur, but more or less are his grandparents. The Bartimaeus Trilogy is a good set of books, fairly easy reading. The stories are about a boy mage named Nicholas, who changes his name to John Drake(not 100% on this, but sounds close). He summons demons, but he quickly finds a high ranked djinn(demon) by the name of Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus the witty, quick demon accompanies him on many an adventure throughout the three book series. For an individual book I would highly recommend Cell by Stephen King. It's about a man, and when the apocalypse starts his cell phone goes off. Many people become infected and go crazy, as to fit with the apocalypse thing. He then meets a bunch of other refugees and they fight for survival. Pretty common Stephen King novel, lots of gore and some cursing(not a whole lot). And the last series I can think of would be Icecrown Chronicles. The first book is about a princess/queen warrior who has to save her kingdom from invasion of a more advanced society. The second book continues the war, but with her gimped son. Her son travels to a desert like place with an old man, there he meets another prince. He quickly learns the desert peoples ways of fighting from horseback with a quick blade like a scimitar. He then returns to face the war.

I agree, Cell is a great novel. For those who are allowed, You Suck, Bloodsucking Fiends, The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove, and a few others by Christopher Moore. They are great novels, but they have some uh "content" in them thats not child appropriate.
