ninja, your sig is below. A signature is a graphic that has the user's username on it. It can help easily identify the poster without reading a name.
A few quick examples of sigs are Ninja's, mine, and Quicker's with Sonic.

There are different ways to make sigs, ranging from just cropping a picture down to size to going full out and modifying an image. www.sigtutorials.com is a pretty great source for signature making tutorials. I've done a few of their tut's, have learned/relearned much. They mostly deal with Photoshop, but I believe I've seen a few GIMP(another image editing program) tut's.
To put up a sig you need to upload it to a website like Photobucket or Tiny Pic. Then copy the BBC code [img][/img], or copy the direct image code and then put the img with brackets and a forward slash on the last one. One of these codes is then placed into the area labeled "signature" when you modify your profile.
